Hello everyone! Happy Solstice! A quick note to tell you that we have started to put together the programme for 2009-10. If you have seen anything recently that you think the membership would enjoy please get in touch - we'll do our best to get them for you. Sometimes we can't book a film due to copyright or distribution rights. Even though a film may be on sale that does not mean it has rights for viewing to a non-theatrical audience. First along is Blind Husbands. Considered to be one of the most impressive directorial debuts of all time, Erich Von Stroheim's Blind Husbands tells the story of a lustful army officer, who sets his cap at the dreamy wife of a rich American whilst on holiday in the South Tyrol. This silent movie unpacks a morally ambiguous tale of sexual obsession told with what became Stroheim's trademark ‘sumptuous visual sensibility'. Beyond its historical interest, Blind Husbands is an engrossing and poignant melodrama. Bishop Lloyd's Palace, Watergate Row South Following this on 23rd July is Man on Wire. On August 7, 1974, Philippe Petit, a French wire walker, juggler, and street performer days shy of his 25th birthday, spent 45 minutes walking, dancing, and lying on a wire illegally rigged between the World Trade Centre's twin towers in New York. Marsh's documentary brings Petit's extraordinary adventure to life through the testimony of Phillipe himself, and some of his co-conspirators who helped him create the unique and magnificent spectacle that became known as “the artistic crime of the century”. St. Olave's Church, Lower Bridge Street Many thanks to Chester Performs. Best wishes, Mike. |
